Oh to be 5 again!

I used to be under the impression that Disneyworld and Disneyland were highly overrated, commercialized parks that only kids ranging from 3-7 years of age would enjoy. Boy was I wrong! I was fortunate enough to revert back into childhood yesterday when my family went to Disneyworld with my roommate and her family. It was a beautiful thing! Not only did I have fun on the rides, but I felt the girlish anticipation of princess-hunting as I walked around the park. I was kind of disappointed when I hadn't seen any exciting characters, but I finally saw Cinderella and Prince Charming in the parade! It was probably one of the best days of my life! Here are some pictures from the day.

What a fantastic realization...

Today while I was cramming like a mad crazy woman for my last and horrible final, I realized that I don't have to pack any books or homework for the airplane ride. Take that!

A lovely moment

Last night on my flight to New York, I looked out my window and saw the beautiful lights of Chicago flickering below me. I was so excited to see the snow (we haven't had any snow yet in Utah), but I was most excited to see the twinkling Christmas lights some people had on their houses. I think the best moment of my entire day was looking down and seeing someone's lights turn on. Here I was...flying along...minding my own business...kinda sad because I couldn't see any lights...and then BAM! It was like they knew I was watching their house and needed some Christmas spirit. It was a lovely moment.

That's Love

Today Morgan and I went to Taco Bell for lunch. I ordered my two-soft-tacos-no-lettuce-with-99-cent-nachos-on-the-side, excited for a Mexican feast! For some horrifying reason, the careless cashier didn't put my nachos on the order. Yes ladies and gentlemen, I was nacho-less. You'd think the world was about to come crumbling down! Partly due to my love for chips and cheese and partly due to a climbing level of estrogen, the waterworks started. We were on our way home when Morgan promptly flipped a U-ie and drove back to Taco Bell.

I insisted that it wasn't necessary, but my knight in shining armor went into that semi-decent quality fast food restaurant and retrieved my missing snack. As I sat in the car recouperating from my brief but ever present nacho withdrawal symptoms, I was reminded once again that showing someone you love them doesn't have to be an elaborate thing. It can be a ten-minute detour back to Taco Bell for a much desired pack of chips and cheese. Yay for love.
Speaking of love, we have set a date! We will be getting married on May 9, 2009.
Love to you all!

Life is beautiful

Yesterday I had the biggest craving to watch "It's a wonderful life." That's when I know my love for the holiday season has kicked in! Right now I'm listening to my Pandora Christmas music station and am absolutely loving life!

If you are craving some music of your own, Oprah.com is giving away 8 songs for free! All you have to do is download them. There are some great tunes...Tony Bennet, Aretha Franklin, and Josh Groban! Can't beat the classics.

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoy time with family and friends!

Here are just a few of the things I'm grateful for (and not in any particular order):
1. Christmas music
2. A five-year-old's appreciation for Santa Claus (working in a Kindergarten during the Holidays is probably the best thing in the entire world!)
3. An expanding interest in cooking (I made homemade hamburgers yesterday, and we're having steaks tonight!)
4. My studly brother who sends me ringtones for free!
5. My handsome fiance who takes wonderful care of me when I am sick. (Sniffles aren't the most attractive.)
6. A comfy, cozy bed that I can sleep blissfully in.
7. Parents who spoil me rotten! (And send me highlighting kits when I mess up coloring my hair...)
8. Cookies and milk
9. Good smelling laundry detergent. (Not only do we have this amazing product that cleans our clothes for us, but it smells so fresh and lovely!)
10. A good book. Reading is good for the soul.

What a wonderful world! Love to you all.

I just wanted you all to know...Morgan and I are officially engaged! We are very excited and so grateful for all your love and support.

Everything I need to know I learned in Kindergarten

My mom has this book at home called, "Everything I need to know I learned in Kindergarten." I don't exactly remember much of my Kindergarten experience, but I have learned so much in the past few weeks as a teacher's assistant. Here are just a few of the things I've learned:

1. Everyone needs a friend. There is a girl in my class with developmental disablities. Recently, a classmate began helping her with her schoolwork, and plays with her at recess. Since then, she has not stopped smiling. Everytime I see them together, it just about brings tears to my eyes.

2. You get more accomplished when you're patient and kind. When I first started working in the Kindergarten, I got frustrated very easily when a child wouldn't listen to me. Sometimes they flat out said "No!" It wasn't something I was used to --- school is a very different envrironment from summer camp or babysitting. I've since learned that when you establish a good and positive relationship right at the beginning, you don't have to worry about being firm and coming across as an evil ogre. They naturally listen to you because you're their friend.

3. Reading is fun. I'd say the best part of my job is getting to listen to all the wonderful children's books we read in Kindergarten. The kids love them. You can see that reading opens their eyes to a whole new world - where anything can happen! Read with your kids. It's one of the best things you can do for them.

4. Children are incredibly perceptive and have wonderful insights. The other day I was playing with a little boy at recess. I looked over at him and saw that he was standing very still, looking intently at the surrounding scenery. I asked him, "What are you looking at bud?" He thought for a minute, then turned and said, "Oh, I'm just looking at the world." What a profound statment.

5. Birthday's are important. To someone who has only lived for five years, the passing of another year is a highly significant occasion --- one to be celebrated with parties, and cupcakes, and fairy costumes, and tiaras, and spiderman cakes, and pictures, and pinatas. I love to see the kids' faces light up when it's their birthday. Celebrate with your kids.

6. Children need boundaries. I used to think that you couldn't give kids boundaries when it came to art projects. Somewhere along the way I learned that if you give any sort of guidance at all, it restricts their "artistic interpretation." That is a bunch of crap. Kids need boundaries. When you give them guidelines, then they have the opportunity to be creative within those guidelines. Otherwise, you just get a bunch of paintings that don't adhere to the curriculum at all. There isn't much progression that way.

7. A simple note or kind gesture touches my heart. My favorite moments at work are when the kids come up to me and ask if I have class that day (I have to leave early to attend my own college classes). I love telling them that my class was cancelled because they get so excited and tell me they're happy I can stay. The other day one of my favorite little girls came up to me and gave me a card that said, "I love you Miss Caitlin." I was so touched. Even five-year-olds can be thoughtful.

I love my job. After all, everything I need to know I learn in Kindergarten!

Love to you all!

Home Sweet Home

My camera broke a few weeks ago, otherwise I would give you a plethora of photographic evidence of my ultra-fabulous weekend in Florida with mi familia! I did, however, get a few baby pictures scanned, and thought I would put them up for fun for the world to laugh at!

Favorite things about going home:

1. Mom's home cooking - meatballs, lasagna, and chicken parmagiana!
2. Having my dad pick me up from the airport!
3. Hugs from Devin and Alli
4. Pampering and shopping like a princess with my mom
5. A comfy queen sized mattress!
6. Warm weather and palm trees!
7. Just hanging out with the fam.
Thanks mom and dad! Love you guys!

Best Friends

I have many best friends. I remember having a conversation with my dad when I was in elementary school - telling him that I had four or five different best friends. He told me that wasn't possible. I couldn't have more than one BEST friend. I suppose the logic makes sense...but remember...you're talking to a highly irrational girl. My three roommates are my best friends, my family are my best friends...so basically, I have quite a few people that I would place in the "best" category.
Last night Morgan and I sat and talked for a long time about life and silly things and I couldn't help but feel so grateful to be madly in love with my best friend.

Best friends rock.
Love to you all.

All grown up and eatin' onions

Soooo....the day has finally come. My mom will read this with a smile on her face I'm sure. I like onions. I despised them all growing up. Ask anyone. If you offered me onions with my pot roast, I'd likely stick my tongue out at you and run in the opposite direction. Thanks to my roommate Ashley however, I discovered that onions can taste really really really GOOD! Granted, I pretty much cook them until all the weird flavor is out, but I'm eating them at least!!! Go me.

The other day I made my mom's homemade meatballs. Delish. Can I just toot my own horn for a sec? Thanks. I FINALLY got the texture/flavor right. I just think the world ought to know that I, Sugarblossom Cate, am a domestic goddess in the making. Watch out Martha Stewart.

I'm going to try and eat healthier from now on. And I don't just mean more carrots and less carbs...I mean eating in general. I have a terrible tendency to skip meals when I'm busy, or to down a bag of peanut butter M&M's for lunch. Morgan has been getting on my case about it, so I decided it's high time for me to shape up.

Love to you all!

It was a good weekend.

So my roommate is an amazing photographer and she offered to take some fun and artistic pictures of Morgan and me this weekend. We had so much fun! Ashley, you rock.

Mission Accomplished

I love cards. I love getting cards, I love receiving cards, and I love MAKING cards! I think the ones I made today are my all-time favorites. So in honor of my fabulous craftiness, I am posting pictures of them. They make me happy. I used acrylic paints and card-stock. It made for a cathartic evening!

Life is going well...I'm excited for the next few months. It's going to be a wonderful winter that's for sure. :)

I'm feeling crafty!

Sometimes, particularly when I have a rather large paper to write, or an important exam to study for, I get the crafty-bug. All I want to do is stay home and be crafty and somehow make a living by pestering people into buying my handmade goods. Lately, I've been checking out all these blogs where women sell jewelry or greeting cards - things of that nature. I want to do that! I want to make adorable things and have people want them! How cool is that?

The other day I was talking to a woman whose daughter goes to the preschool where I work. She was waiting to pick up her child and was happily making little-girl hair bows...the really cute kind that I wish I could still get away with. The ribbons were to DIE for, and I could just imagine how amazing they would look on all the little girls in my Kindergarten. Then she told me it takes her about three weeks to fill an order (a local consignment store sells her hair-bows) and she makes over $1300! And WHY am I going to college? (Just kidding mom!)

So be on the lookout. I think I'm going to start making glorious little hand-made items that your life will not be complete without! Hopefully my grades won't suffer too much.

I WON!

So a few weeks ago, my mom won a pair of super cute earrings from a blog she found (www.suaviloquy.blogspot.com). Well, as you would guess, I decided to check it out too! And guess what? Today I won some awesome stationary. Can life get any better? I submit that it cannot! From what I understand, the stationary is handmade by a woman in Georgia. She uses eco-friendly materials and donates part of her profits to animal shelters. Way to go Wendy Conrad! And thanks for the free give-away April! Goes along really well with the paper I'm supposed to write tonight about why I'm environmentally aware. :)

I'd like a serving of life with a side order of happiness please...

Hi.

My name is Cate, and I'm an Oreo addict.

My addiction started a few weeks ago when Morgan and I decided to get cookies and milk for our movie night snack. Somehow, over the years, I forgot how happy eating soggy chocolate cookies makes me. Today was my loooonnnng day of work. Don't get me wrong, I'm loving it, but 8 hours of pure kid time can be draining. I'm sure all you moms understand. Morgan called when I got off and asked if I wanted a ride home. I was hesitant at first, but finally decided that a ride would be nice. I moseyed on over to our appointed rendezvous point, and stood on the corner. All of a sudden, I saw that Morgan was already parked and standing on the sidewalk. This was my thought process:

That was fast! How did he already get here?

Wait...why is there a picnic blanket on the ground next to him? And why is he holding a gallon of milk?

Oh my gosh. Are those Oreos?

Yep. You guessed it. Morgan surprised me with an Oreos and milk picnic. Are you jealous yet? Definitely the highlight of my day. I think I'm going to need to join an Oreos Anonymous program soon though. The first step is acceptance, right? :)

Let's go to Vegas baby!!

So funny story. On Friday Morgan and I played darts while we tried to decide what to do for our fantastic (and apparently not-so-planned out) date night. I won the first game, then Morgan won, and on the third game, it was neck and neck. I threw a dart and it hit the board, but the score didn't register (it is an electronic board) and the dart fell off. Morgan SWORE it hit the bullseye...and I thought he was just trying to let me win. This is what our conversation looked like:

Morgan: "Babe! You hit the bullseye!"

Cate: "No...I don't think I did..."

Morgan: "I'm pretty sure you did..."

Cate: "Okay, well I'll throw it again, and if I hit the bullseye, that's it. We have to get married tonight."

Morgan: "Deal."

And this is the dart I threw following our conversation.

Not only did it hit the bullseye, but it hit the most central dot on the whole board.

Our engagement/bridal/wedding picture.

So sorry none of you could make it to the wedding! But a deal's a deal! The funny thing is I wasn't even trying to aim. I just chucked it at the board. Apparently my subconscious self really wants to marry that big goober. (I guess my regular conscience does too) :)

Don't worry...be happy

My roommate recently got a new cell phone, which she also uses as her alarm clock. She has all these nifty little songs she can play as her alarm...and consequently I've been waking up to John Mayer and Boys Like Girls. A few days ago, she changed it to Bobby McFerrin's (sp?) "Don't worry be happy." I've decided that this should be my mantra.

Ugh. Sometimes life is so hard. And it's so easy to get sucked into the vortex of "My life is horrible all I want to do is eat chocolate ice cream," but then I hear the words to this famous song and realize, oh yea. Be happy. And then I see Morgan doing his Chemistry homework and I think, I am so lucky! Not just because he is extraordinarily good looking and I'm madly in love, but because I could have waaaayyyy harder classes this semester. Chem 105 anyone? No thanks, I'll stick with Speech Anatomy and Basic Hearing Science any day.

Do you ever get the craving to water color? I do. It's probably a good thing that I forgot to bring my paints to school this year considering my crazy intense schedule, but it would be a nice stress reliever. Too bad I don't have my paints tonight...it looks like Morgan might be busy doing chemistry homework for awhile. Maybe I should go put on some Bobby McFerrin for him. :)

Don't worry. Be happy.

Um...who's poking my voodoo doll with a needle?

So...some days are better than others. Today is one of those days where I felt like this:

My computer died today. I took it in to the shop and they are going to look at it and see if it is fixable, but it's highly unlikely. Chances are, I'll be in the market for a new laptop soon, and will be a few hundred dollars poorer. So much for getting paid last week.

Apart from losing my trusty friend, work was HARD today. And I mean I wanted to pull my hair out. I felt like I was dealing with little monsters who absolutely would not do what they were asked, of in any way, shape or form cooperate. Does anyone have any tips for working with kids when they refuse to do something? I try all the usuals (giving them choices usually works), but sometimes just feel like I'm at a loss! Someone once said working in schools was the best form of birth control. I'm starting to understand why.

And now I'm at home, staring at a mountain of homework, which ironically enough requires the use of a computer.

As Bob Wiley stated over and over again in "What about Bob?": "I feel good, I feel great, I feel wonderful. I feel good, I feel great, I feel wonderful!" (At least that's what I keep telling myself.) :)

Oh the marvelous month of September

At work today we sang a song about September, and how the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting cooler. Now, I don't know about you, but my days still seem pretty dang long. Between school and work, I'm exhausted at the end of the day. Sometimes I look at the clock and wonder if I somehow teleported into a parallel universe where time ticks backwards. As for the nights getting cooler...I'd have to agree. I've already busted out my fall-ish jackets. You know the kind...the lovely "it's-too-hot-for-a-coat-but-too-cold-for-a-shirt" apparel.

As I was pondering the marvelous month of September, I started thinking of all the great things that will happen in the next 15 days. According to one website I found, today is "Make a hat day." (And to think, I left my sewing kit at home. Guess I'll have to wait until next year.)

Tomorrow is "Collect Rocks Day" and Wednesday is National Apple Dumpling Day. The Band-Aid was invented on September 22nd, which also happens to be the first day of Fall. The Office season premiere is September 25th, "Crush a can day" is on September 27th, and most importantly, the safety pin was invented on September 30th.

Honestly, what other month could compete with collecting rocks and crushing cans? I vote that every day should be "National September is the Best Month Day." (But I also like August, November, December, May, and June. Maybe we could establish some sort of rotating holiday observance. Kind of like how the weather service rotates the names of hurricanes every season.)

Because Katherine said so.

(This entry is dedicated to one awesome roommate named Katherine! )

Thanks for kicking my sorry butt to update the blog you all so faithfully read.

Well, it's the new school year, and I'm already drowning in a sea of homework and reading and studying. I am working this semester in a Kindergarten classroom, as well as nannying for a little boy...and so I've finally realized how shockingly difficult it is to balance class, work, studying, and a social life. And to top it all off, my roomies and I put together an intramural volleyball team. I think I might be certifiably insane.

But speaking of roomies...I just have to say that mine are the best! :) Love you girls! You keep me afloat. Ash - you're going to do amazing out there. Kat - may the force be with you. we'll figure it out soon! Alyssa - it's okay, we can overanalyze together! go women!!!!

I AM THE QUEEN!!!

Birthdays rock. Now, it's only been mine for 12 minutes, but I just have to say those twelve minutes have been awesome. I opened my birthday package from my mom, I got two texts from Morgan, and I got a sweet email from my brother. Life just doesn't get any better than that. Thanks mom and dad for making me happen!!! ;)

Love you all. Thanks for being such a fabulous part of my life!

Some catching up to do...

Hello all my fabulous and devoted readers!!

I love updating this thing and thinking how few people actually look at it. It's slightly depressing, but when all is said and done I'm going to export my blog to this program (http://www.blurb.com/) that turns it into a book. Then I will have an awesome journal-type publication for all of my posterity to read. Since I'm sure they'll be soooo interested in my oh-so-fabulous life. :)

I finished up finals (Wahoo!) on Thursday and have been enjoying some free time since then. I moved into my old apt on Saturday, took lots of ibuprofen on Sunday because I carried 50,000 lbs of stuff up three flights of stairs on Saturday, and had cleaning checks and a job interview today! I've been so productive. Mom would be proud.

Last night was "game-night" with some friends, and we had a blast. We played Apples to Apples (which I was so close to winning by the way) and Beyond Balderdash. I LOVE both of those games. Balderdash is really funny...you can get pretty creative! It always makes me feel pretty stupid though when I don't think through my answer. We were asked to come up with a plausible meaning for the acronym "I.F.F.A." I put "International Future Farmers of America." Hahaha...if you're slow like me you probably didn't realize that I put International and America in the same acronym. Yep. I'm in college.

A few weekends ago, Morgan and I went to "Color-Me-Mine" which is this really awesome place that lets you pick out a pottery piece and paint it however you want. They fire it for you, and you pick it up three days later! It was SUCH a fun date. Here is how my bowl turned out:

Well folks, that's your update for today! Life is fabulous and I have no complaints. So if you don't mind, I think I'll go take a nap or read or do something equally relaxing. Oh, and keep your fingers crossed that I get a job!

So until next time, my dear and faithful readers...

Yours very truly,
Sugarblossom Cate

Trip to the Zoo!

Last Wednesday we went to the zoo with Morgan's brother and nephews. Going to the zoo has lost a little bit of its excitement since I was 7 years old, but it was still a nice afternoon. It was a small zoo, but had some pretty cool animals! The coolest part was seeing the black bears fighting...maybe I'm a sick-o for thinking that, but there ya go.

Christmas in July

I don't know who decided that Christmas-time festivities could be celebrated in July, but I'm glad they did. I guess if they were going to be logical, they would have designated June as the month of choice since it's halfway through the year...but I'm not complaining. I loved watching those creepy claymation reindeer/santa/jack frost movies during Christmas-in-July marathons when I was growing up...and not much has changed since then. I decided that this year, I was going to throw my own Christmas-in-July party. On the spur of the moment, Morgan and I went to Dollar Tree and spent $5 on wacky toys for each other on "Christmas Eve" (July 24th), and exchanged gifts later that night. Here are a few pictures from our exciting evening! Spontenaiety rocks.
Our Christmas tree and stockings! I made Morgan wear the hat. I wore my festive Christmas pajama pants. :)
Morgan got me my favorite candy --- Whoppers!!!

I love this picture because it's his "real" smile. How fitting considering it's a football toy. :)

The Great Outdoors!

Last week Morgan and I went to the Sheffer family reunion! It was so much fun...it was a long drive waaaayyy past Heber, but definitely worth the trip. We went four wheeling, canoeing, and played with all the kids. This is a picture of Savannah and me. Isn't she styling?

Here is a picture of Morgan and me canoeing...how athletic of us! We even went over to the other side of the lake and skipped rocks for a few minutes. All in all, fabulous trip.

Feeling under the weather?

This picture pretty much sums up how I feel right now.
Here are a few tips if you find yourself feeling "under-the-weather":
1. Drink tons and tons and tons of water.
2. Sleep. Lots of sleep.
3. Take a shower. Always makes you feel better.
4. Don't wear make-up. Let yourself go a little. ;)
5. Watch a good movie while you cuddle with a poofy blanket in bed.
6. Eat comfort foods (If you are feeling up to it). Soup is so cliche, but soooo good.
7. Watch a rerun of "I Love Lucy." I recommend the Vitameatavegimin episode.

Just Because

I really am the luckiest girl in the world. When Morgan stopped by my apartment after he got home from work today, he had in his hand a beautiful bouquet of a dozen white and red roses. When I asked him why he was giving me flowers, he said, "Just because." (Okay, that's the part when everyone goes 'awwwww') They were wrapped in pretty red paper with a bow...and there were even flower petals inside the cellophane. It was the nicest bouquet of flowers I've ever recieved...and not just because they were gorgeous. It was becasue he gave them to me for no reason. It's the little things in life that make you smile...and let me tell you! I'm smiling big today!

My Girls

Where would we be without friends? I'll tell you where. We'd be stuck in a meaningless pit of a life with no chance of random dance parties at 2am or quote boards with phrases such as, "You blazin' hussie!" There would be no Sunday roomie dinners, no gruesome hikes to ridiculously tall mountain summits (ex: Mt. Timp), no late night chats about boys, no chick-flick nights, no dressing up in crazy clothes and taking pictures that will later be used as blackmail, none of the above. Like I said; a meaningless pit of an existence.

I am grateful for my friends. They are the coolest, funniest, and most beautiful girls in the ENTIRE world. Don't even try and debate this fact with me because I will win. Ashley, Alyssa, and Katherine are thebomb.com, hands down. They will kick your butts in any sport, climb higher on any rock-face surface, and know exactly what to say when you need to hear something. I'm so glad they are there for me. I'd do anything for them. (Katherine...I'll have that body moved for you sometime this week. Oh, and the bag of money is in unmarked bags in the alley by the Malt Shoppe.)

So here's to good times! A shout out to my girls! Love you guys!

At the summit of Mt. Timp

Note to self: Less Tequila

Roomie Dinners (Disclaimer: Morgan is not a roomie)

Beautiful World, Beautiful Day

Morgan and I hiked the Y last weekend and had an absolute blast! Unfortunately, we forgot how hard of a hike it is. You wouldn't think it would be that bad...it's just a little more than a mile! But it's so incredibly steep. Or maybe I'm just out of shape. Either way, I took my fair share of breaks! The trip was worth it though, because we saw the most amazing sunset and beautiful mountain scenery. I hope we can all pause for a few minutes today and enjoy the beauty around us. Seriously, this world is incredible.

Where in the world did Caitlin's tonsils go???

So this is the fabulous picture that was taken about an hour after surgery...the much anticipated tonsillectomy! As you can tell, I look very excited. I remember thinking, "I can't smile!" It's more of a grimace, but what the heck. Can you blame me? I also remember thinking on the drive home, "Who put all these bumps in the road? Seriously...did the people of Florida forget to pay their taxes and did the government forget to pave the streets?" After anesthesia, bumpy roads are not a pleasant experience.

The whole procedure was quite an adventure...it was my first surgery! Everyone was very nice, the nurses, doctors, everyone. The best part was getting away with saying and doing stupid things when I was coming out of the drugs. The first thing I asked the nurse when I woke up was, "TELL ME A JOKE!" Then I kept asking for my "mommy" and might have let a few swear words slip (ooopps!!!). I also promised the nurse I would never do drugs because they made me feel "crazy." :) I bet that nurse gets to hear some pretty crazy things as people come out of surgery!

Since I've been home my family has been wonderful. Mom has treated me like a princess and given me the most delicious banana popsicles ever. Tonight I was overjoyed to finally have some mashed potatoes. I've been dying for some macaroni & cheese...hopefully I'll be ready by tomorrow! :) I've definitely had a lot of time on my hands...I think I've watched a thousand movies since yesterday. "August Rush" is my top recommendation. I watched "Sgt. Bilko" today, with Steve Martin. I forgot how funny that movie is. Watch it!

Karen's Wedding!

This weekend was Karen's wedding...and it was wonderful! The ceremony was beautiful, and the open house tons of fun! The happy couple looked so happy and Karen was gorgeous! It was really nice to see all my extended family again...I hope we can all get together again soon. Love you all!
